Pearl Care 101: Clean, Store & Shine (S925 + Freshwater)
Pearls are organic and deserve gentle care. Here’s the simple routine we use in our Toronto studio to keep freshwater pearls and S925 sterling silver luminous.
Quick rules (bookmark)
- Last on, first off—apply perfume, hairspray and lotions before jewelry.
- Wipe after wear with a soft, dry cloth.
- Store pieces separately to avoid scratches and tangles.
- Never soak pearls. No ultrasonic or steam cleaners.
Clean pearls (freshwater)
- Lightly dampen a soft cloth with lukewarm water (you may add a drop of mild soap).
- Dip the cloth, not the pearls, and wipe each pearl gently.
- Dry with a second cloth, then lay flat for 10–15 minutes before storing.
Avoid: detergent, alcohol, vinegar, abrasive cloths, chemical “dips,” ultrasonic or steam.
Clean S925 sterling silver
- Unplated S925: polish gently with a quality silver cloth; avoid the pearls.
- Gold tone over S925 (gold-plated): wipe with a soft dry cloth only—no dips or abrasives.
Store the smart way
- Use the BMJ pouch or a lined case; keep pearls away from heat and direct sun.
- Travel: place each piece in a small zip bag, then into a hard jewelry case.
Strung pearls: inspection & maintenance
- Store flat to prevent the thread from stretching.
- Ensure the string is fully dry before putting it away.
- Check knots and thread regularly; if you notice fraying, gaps or residue, have the piece restrung (keep knots between each pearl).
Weekly 30-second routine
Wipe → coil chains loosely → check clasps and earring backs. That’s it.
When to see a jeweller
Loose stones, bent posts or broken chains—stop wearing and book a repair.
